Understanding Motivation and Burnout in 2e and Neurodivergent Learners with Dr. Megan Anna Neff

Understanding Motivation and Burnout in 2e and Neurodivergent Learners with Dr. Megan Anna Neff

In our community survey, motivation emerged as the number one topic of interest among families of 2e learners. Many parents see their bright, capable child struggling to engage with schoolwork and wonder why typical incentives - grades, rewards, or praise - don’t seem to work.

In conversation with the REEL team, Dr. Megan Anna Neff will explore motivation through a neurodiversity-affirming lens, introducing the concept of the interest-based nervous system and unpacking why ADHD, autistic, and gifted learners often arrive at motivation through very different pathways. She’ll explain how spiky cognitive profiles, sensory processing differences, and chronic stress or burnout can all shape how a child approaches tasks.

As Dr. William Dodson notes, “If I can get engaged, I can do anything", and yet for many ND learners, that sense of engagement can be hard to access. Dr. Neff will share compassionate, practical strategies families can use to support curiosity, energy, and emotional well-being at home and in school, helping kids reconnect with authentic motivation rather than compliance-driven effort.

Dr. Megan Anna Neff is a licensed clinical psychologist, author, and educator who specializes in neurodivergent-affirming care. As a late-identified autistic and ADHD psychologist, she blends clinical expertise with lived experience to help families, educators, and clinicians understand neurodivergent inner worlds with nuance and compassion. Through her work at Neurodivergent Insights, she creates widely used tools, courses, and frameworks that translate complex psychology into accessible, empowering resources for everyday life.

Live CE Training for Therapists

What This Training Covers

Although Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is widely considered an evidence-based approach, it is often experienced as ineffective or invalidating by neurodivergent clients. This training invites clinicians to critically examine how CBT assumptions about insight, language, attention span, abstract thinking, and self-regulation may not align with autistic and ADHD ways of thinking and processing.

Participants will explore neurodiversity-affirming adaptations to CBT that prioritize nervous system safety, regulation, and relational engagement. Using case studies and practical demonstrations, the training highlights concrete strategies such as visual frameworks, games, stories, and flexible session sequencing to support neurodivergent pediatric clients in developing emotional understanding and coping skills without relying on compliance-based or top-down approaches.

What You'll Learn

  • Identify the cognitive, language, sensory, and self-regulation demands inherent in traditional CBT and assess how these demands may create barriers for autistic and ADHD pediatric clients.

  • Analyze commonly used CBT techniques to evaluate their appropriateness, effectiveness, and limitations when applied with neurodivergent children and adolescents.

  • Apply neurodiversity-affirming adaptations to CBT by translating core concepts into developmentally appropriate therapy goals.

Who Should Attend

This program is designed for psychologists, professional counselors, clinical social workers, marriage and family therapists, and graduate-level clinicians who provide therapy or assessment services to neurodivergent children and adolescents.

The content included in this training is provided at an Intermediate to Advanced level. A solid understanding of general traits of neurodivergent children and teens and basic tenets of neurodiversity-affirming therapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy are required to fully benefit from this training.

Register by January 17 for complimentary access to:

Framing Motivation: An Executive Function–Informed Approach to Help Kids Get Going <span class="sqsrte-text-color--custom" style="color: rgb(231, 19, 5)">POSTPONED from Jan 10:</span>

Framing Motivation: An Executive Function–Informed Approach to Help Kids Get Going POSTPONED from Jan 10:

Saturday, January 10th, 10:00am-12:00pm, Fusion Academy
320 Needham St #100, Newton, MA

Does your child seem to struggle with motivation? Why can gifted and 2E children easily engage in activities they love, sometimes for hours, yet struggle immensely with doing tasks that are seemingly simple? Traditional methods like rewards, consequences, and reminders often prove ineffective, and often lead to increased frustration for both children and parents.

This in-person session by Courtney Edman, Founder of 2tametheshamE offers a fresh perspective on motivation and blends neuroscience with a neurodiversity-informed, compassionately curious parenting style. Parents will leave with a new understanding of motivation and feeling empowered with strategies and creative ideas for helping their child get started on all types of activities and tasks while also strengthening their relationship.

Free to MAGE members.

KITE summer camp

Registration has begun online at www.kaleidoscopekids.com
K I T E
(Kaleidoscope I
nstitute for Thinking Excellence)
July 27-31, 2026
A one-week full-day advanced program for high ability learners in grades
Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 7
Location: Pike School, 34 Sunset Rock Road, Andover, Massachusetts
KITE 2026 Theme: “MYSTERIES AND MARVELS”
Cost: $550+ Extended Day options available
“Mysteries and Marvels” works beautifully as a theme for high-ability learners because it taps into their natural curiosity and love of big, open-ended questions. It’s broad enough to cover history, scienceu, literature, and creativity, while also giving room for deep dives and hands-on exploration.
WHO SHOULD COME TO KITE?
If your child grasps new concepts quickly and deeply, asks questions that show depth of understanding, often adds that “something extra” to a project, does not require any in-classroom support, seems motivated to explore new ideas, and/or spends time waiting for others to “catch up”... then we highly recommend that you try the KITE program this summer. Please feel free to call us at (978) 494-3978 or email kelsea@kaleidoscopekids.com any time to discuss your child and to determine whether the KITE program would be a good match.

Details

Understanding Twice Exceptionality Facilitated Discussion Group

Kicks Off on Tues, Feb 3, 7-8pm PT

Meets: Feb 3, 10, 17, 24, 2026

Only 8 spots

Are you looking for an expert-led small group that fosters supportive conversations and provides personalized practical strategies that truly matter to you and your family? Whether you are new to a 2e diagnosis or continually wrestling with the complexities, this is the group for you.

What You’ll Gain:

  • Expert Guidance: Our leader’s extensive background and innovative work reflect her deep commitment to creating inclusive and neurodivergent positive environments.

  • Insightful Discussions: Understand twice-exceptionality (2e) and how it shapes learning, social, and emotional development. Explore why 2e children’s needs often go unnoticed or misunderstood and how to change this.

  • Personalized Practical Tools: Learn strategies to address educational and parenting challenges, foster curiosity, and build supportive communities. Gain advocacy tools and strength-based approaches to leverage your child’s abilities and interests.

  • Intimate Community: Connect with other parents facing similar challenges. Build lasting connections and share resources with parents who "get it."

What To Expect:

In these discussions, we will delve into the unique experiences of twice-exceptional (2e) kids—children with remarkable strengths alongside diagnoses like dyslexia, ADHD, autism, anxiety, slow processing speed, etc. These differences often present as challenges in traditional education and parenting systems and approaches. Together, we’ll explore how to better support our 2e kids by understanding and embracing their exceptional abilities while addressing possible barriers.

Join a small, supportive group of parents who truly “get it”. Together, we’ll engage in a deep dive filled with interactive simulations, the latest research, neurodivergent-affirming best practices, and valuable resources. We’ll explore how these insights directly relate to you and your 2e child through open discussions, offering practical tools and a sense of community to help you navigate challenges and celebrate strengths.

KITE 2026 Theme: “MYSTERIES AND MARVELS”

SENGconnect: Perfectionism, Pressure, and Permission to Be Human

Event Date
January 14, 2026 (Wednesday)

SENGconnect January Topic: Perfectionism, Pressure, and Permission to Be Human

About:

As we move into a new year, many families find themselves setting fresh goals and hoping for smooth starts. But for gifted and twice-exceptional (2e) children, the beginning of the year can also reignite feelings of pressure. Pressure to achieve, to “get it right,” or to live up to their own high standards. In this SENG Connect session, we’ll explore the emotional roots of perfectionism and how it uniquely shows up in gifted and 2e children. Together, we’ll discuss how to help kids recognize perfectionistic thinking patterns, reframe mistakes as essential parts of learning, and replace self-criticism with self-compassion.

Through shared experiences and practical strategies, we’ll also reflect on how modeling self-acceptance and flexibility as adults can create emotionally safe spaces for children to take healthy risks and grow.

Themes include:

  • Recognizing signs of perfectionistic thinking in gifted and 2e kids

  • Reframing success, failure, and effort through a growth mindset lens

  • Encouraging self-compassion and emotional resilience

  • Giving kids, and ourselves, permission to be human

SENG: Therapeutic Challenges in Meeting the Whole-Person (intellectual, physical, social, and emotional) Needs of the Profoundly Gifted

Event Date
January 13, 2026 (Tuesday)

January Topic: Therapeutic Challenges in Meeting the Whole-Person (intellectual, physical, social, and emotional) Needs of the Profoundly Gifted

About: Asynchronous development reaches its widest span in profoundly gifted individuals. Early reading and rapidly expanding vocabularies provide access to complex content, while protean imagination, metaphorical thinking, and intuitive insights create a rich inner world. Yet, without the skills to organize and contain these capacities, emotional and cognitive flooding may result. Through a compelling case study, Dr. Grobman will illustrate therapeutic challenges and share both his client’s journey and his own emotional and intellectual responses as therapy unfolded.

talent development, and expertise? What does it mean to add depth, complexity, and abstractness as part of differentiated and advanced instruction? Frameworks and models are important tools teachers can use to create challenging learning opportunities, promote advanced thinking, and make thinking visible. Students can rely on models and frameworks to guide their own thinking and to engage in practices of the discipline.   Add to your pedagogical toolkit and learn various models and frameworks that help students examine problems, relationships, and concepts in different disciplines and guide teacher questioning. POSTPONED to Jan 24! Framing Motivation: An Executive Function–Informed Approach to Help Kids Get Going

Left Behind Zoom Movie Screening & 2e Dyslexia Panel

REEL is honored to screen the movie Left Behind - an inspiring story of a group of determined moms who band together to create the first public dyslexic school in the largest school district in America, New York City.

After the screening of Left Behind - join us for a powerful panel conversation about the intersection of dyslexia and giftedness.

This panel brings together leaders in the field of learning differences:

  • Dr. Fernette Eide, international expert on dyslexia and co-author of The Dyslexic Advantage and The Mislabeled Child, co-creator of the forthcoming movie, The Dyslexic Advantage.

  • Anna Cencioso, Founder and Head of School at Touchstone Learning

  • Mandy Hoff, Learning Specialist at the Schwab Learning Center

Together, they’ll explore why dyslexia is often misunderstood or missed entirely in 2e (twice-exceptional) learners, how traditional identification methods fall short, and what kinds of supports truly help these students thrive. The conversation will address what effective, affirming support can look like across the K–12 journey, how to advocate for appropriate accommodations and instruction, and how a strengths-based view of dyslexia changes everything.

This discussion will help you better understand the complexity—and the potential—of dyslexic learners.

The movie will play from 6:30pm-7:45pm PST, followed by the panel discussion 7:45pm-8:30pm PST.

You can also hear the moviemakers panel about the creation of this film at the Stanford Neurodiversity Summit on Sept 13 at 4:30-5:30pm.

The panel will be recorded and emailed to all RSVPs.

NEW This event will have live Spanish translation of the panel.
